EDINBURGH restaurants are to again add £1 to bills during the Festival to raise money for the homeless.


The scheme, which supports the charity Streetsmart, raised £19,000 last year and was launched again at a reception in Tiger Lily, George Street. Across the UK, the scheme has raised £4.2 million since its launch in 1998.

Budget review recommends up to 60,000 public jobs cut PDF Print E-mail

Up to 60,000 people working in the public sector in Scotland could lose their jobs, according to an independent review commissioned by ministers.

 

The panel which considered options for future expenditure recommended a fall in public sector employment of between 5.7% and 10% by 2014-15.

The government is planning to scrap the default retirement age in the UK from October 2011.

Under the proposal, employers would not be allowed to dismiss staff because they had reached the age of 65.

 

Activists, who have long campaigned against the rule, welcomed the proposal as a "victory" against ageism.

Currently, an employer can force an employee to retire at the age of 65 without paying any financial compensation.

WOMEN living in the most deprived areas of Scotland are the least likely to come forward for vital breast cancer screening, official statistics have shown.

As latest figures show screening rates across the country exceeded national targets, the NHS in Scotland revealed that the uptake appeared to be dependent on where women lived, with rates highest in the most affluent areas of Scotland.

Kirkcaldy A&E night closures staffing row PDF Print E-mail

The Scottish government has said staffing is being put in place to avoid overnight closures of Kirkcaldy's accident and emergency unit.

 

It comes after the health secretary was urged to ensure it receives a "fair allocation" of doctors.

 

Fife Health Board has announced that the A&E department at the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy had been closed overnight for a second week.
